"my ONE and only daughter"

I will never forget the first time:

   - I felt her kick me;

   - The first time I heard her heartbeat;

   - The first time I felt her hiccup;

   - The first time I held her little naked body on my bare chest (BEST MEMORY I WILL EVER HAVE!);

   - The first time she looked into my eyes;

   - The first time she sneezed;

   - The first time she laughed;

   - The first time she danced;

   - The first time she kissed me;

   - The first time she held ME;

   - The first time she wiped my tears away;

   - The first time she said mommy;

   - The first time I had to take her to daycare (HARDEST FIRST MONTH EVER!);

   - He first boo boo;

She is my first and only daughter.

She is my first and only child.

She is my Lilianah :)

Maybe I’m sentimental, because it’s late at night, but I found this really touching. I hadn’t thought of the number one from a parent’s perspective. That makes so much sense! It could be great to get other parents to come up with unique “first” moments for their kids. Yeah. I’m gonna start that collaboration. Bravo Anah!

"1 Hour, 1 Minute, 1 Second"

My grandfather hated clocks.

Clocks, he said, were deceptive in their construction. They mapped time onto a circle, and told us that every hour, minute, second repeated itself once every day. Around them, we let our guards down, slipped into the easy comfort of repetition, and closed our eyes to the truth: Time was no circle.

On his death bed, he recognized none of us and stared listlessly into space.  I think he was looking back on the winding spiral of his life, lingering on every moment he longed to revisit; perhaps in his youth, young brave and stupid, he dared to believe that he could.

He exhaled his very last sigh of regret, and as I closed his eyes, I opened mine: Every second, once passed, was lost forever.

I love this! Short, bittersweet, insightful, and thematically rich. It is, above all else, beautifully written.

Illustrators could imagine some conceptual clocks, or perhaps what the grandfather looked like on his deathbed; maybe even a timeline of his life, spiralling back into the past.

There could be so many approaches to writing a Tiny Story for this image. It’s such a rich resource. Looking forward to reading remixes of it!

I love this form of storytelling with the in-progress illustrations and the accompanying voice over. The photograph reveal at the end was a really nice way to end the story. Such a feel-good, optimistic record!
